CPU generation naming
Intel's Core Ultra 100-series (e.g. Ultra 7 155H) is "Series 1"; the 200-series (e.g. Ultra 7 258V) is "Series 2," a newer architecture — the model number's first digit-block signals generation separately from the 5/7/9 tier number. AMD's Ryzen mobile code reads as four digits: first = lineup year, second = tier/family, third = core architecture, fourth = variant (0 low, 5 high) — a bigger first digit means a newer lineup YEAR, not automatically newer architecture. TDP wattage class (U vs H vs HX)
The single most misleading laptop spec: the same CPU model name can be configured at different sustained wattages by different manufacturers. U-class runs ~15-28W (efficiency-first), H-class ~35-45W+ (sustained performance), HX-class 55W+ (desktop-replacement). Display: nits, color coverage, refresh rate
Under 300 nits struggles in bright rooms; 300-400 nits is the common indoor-only band; 400-600 nits handles bright indoor/overcast outdoor; 600-1000+ nits is sunlight-readable — but that top figure is often an unsustainable HDR peak, not the sustained SDR brightness. sRGB coverage suits office/web use; DCI-P3 coverage matters for photo/video color work and needs its own stated percentage. 120Hz smooths motion but costs battery life versus 60Hz unless variable refresh is supported. RAM: soldered vs SODIMM, LPDDR5 vs DDR5
Most thin-and-light laptops in 2026 — including nearly every MacBook — ship with soldered, non-upgradeable RAM; SODIMM survives mainly in bulkier business/gaming laptops. Soldered LPDDR5/5x is not automatically worse (real power/bandwidth gains over SODIMM DDR5), but it means the configuration ordered is permanent. See Is Soldered RAM a Dealbreaker?.
Storage: NVMe generation and slot count
Higher NVMe PCIe generations (Gen3 → Gen4 → Gen5) raise max sequential throughput, though gains beyond Gen4 are modest for typical office/student workloads. A dual M.2-slot laptop allows adding storage later; a single-slot laptop caps total capacity at whatever was ordered.
Battery: Wh to realistic runtime
A battery's real capacity is its watt-hour (Wh) rating; manufacturer "up to X hours" claims are typically measured at minimum brightness with the device idle or looping local video. Rough real-world bands: under 45Wh is a half-day machine under mixed use, 50-60Wh is a comfortable workday, 70Wh+ supports heavier use without a midday charge. Charging: USB-C PD wattage vs barrel
USB-C PD chargers must match or exceed a laptop's draw or it charges slowly under load. U-class thin laptops typically need 65W; H/HX-class performance laptops often need 100W+, and some still use a proprietary barrel connector because their draw exceeds practical USB-C PD limits.
Ports: Thunderbolt 4/5 vs USB4 vs USB 3.2
Thunderbolt 4 and base USB4 both run at 40Gbps; Thunderbolt 5 doubles that to 80Gbps (120Gbps boost for displays) and is backward compatible with Thunderbolt 4/3 and USB4/USB-C. Plain USB-C without a Thunderbolt or USB4 label can be as slow as USB 3.2 Gen 1 (~10Gbps) — the port shape alone reveals nothing about speed. See Thunderbolt vs USB4 vs USB-C Explained.
